Poli Sci Assign 1

The current issue I chose was the speech President Obama gave to children grades k-12 about the importance of education. After reading two articles telling about the event one from CNN http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/08/obama.school.speech/index.html and a similar story from the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/8243909.stm This speech has been a controversy over the past week. When I read the speech two of the five questions come to mind. First Qui bono? Several conservatives are or were concerned as to what the message to the children of America would be. By the same hand several people could see the positive affect this could have. Everyone benefits from this situation, the speech wasn't meant to lead anyone in a specific direction. Simply to tell the kids they control their future. In his speech President Obama says, "Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you, because here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future." I believe we can all benefit because this encourages children to become what they want, and that they can achieve their dreams. Second, How is this related to that? By the president encouraging children to further their education this one speech and one event can lead to children becoming inventors, engineers and entrepreneurs. This will only help the economy and lead to new discoveries. These questions and the answers that were provided makes me sad, realizing that several of the people who may be against the speech are close minded or do not care to stay informed which means they are making decisions based only on emotions without checking the facts.
